The Shark Week

8 days / 7 nights Snorkel Focused Tour

San Cristobal, Isabela, Santa Cruz

This tour is perfect for water lovers, avid snorkelers that are looking to have amazing underwater adventures, without being divers. We called it the Shark Week because sharks are usually what people are looking to spot when it comes to snorkeling and diving here, and there are certainly great chances to spot sharks in this tour. But as there is no interactions here to attract animals what you will see or not will always be a surprise. We do take you to the best spots so at the end of the week you surely will have seen great things! We did include a visit in the highlands to see the giant tortoises and on the different tours you go you may also see frigate birds, marine iguanas, blue footed boobies. If you wish to modify some parts of the itinerary feel free to ask us!

Important Notes

General information

  • SWIMMING LEVEL: as it is a snorkeling tour, it is mandatory that you are comfortable in the water, that you do not need floating device (the guides will have a buoyancy for help too and we can provide snorkeling vests, but it is required that you able to swim well without any help).
  • ON THE TORTUGA: snorkeling tour, there can be a fishing session (these are tours that were open to local fishermen).
  • ON DAY 5: please note the sometimes there isn’t a lot of time between coming back from the activity and the boat back to Santa Cruz – also that you will have already done the checkout from the hotel before the tour. You will have access to bathroom to change in the reception of the hotel and then in Santa Cruz once in your hotel there.
  • WATER TEMPERATURE: varies during the year – we include shorty or long (2.5 mm) wetsuits according to the season.
  • ITINERARY: some visits can be changed last minute. The National Park may close sites without previous warning; or ocean conditions can make a site dangerous to go, in that case the captain has the last word. If a site cannot be visited once on the boat because of safety reasons we cannot refund (check with your insurance). If a site is closed by the National Park and we have time to offer a similar option, we will rebook you OR refund you the excursion price.
  • IT IS AN ACTIVE TOUR: let us know if you want to book an extra day or two to just relax at the beach.
  • TRANSPORTATION: Is made by small speedboats for tours and inter-island navigation.

We cannot control the ocean, if a swell comes in the ride can be bumpy, especially during the Garúa season (see below). If you are usually subject to motion sickness, please bring parches or pills (you can also buy pills on Galapagos). From experience, the parches are really effective! If you suffer from strong motion sickness or travel with kids or elderly, we strongly suggest you upgrade to a flight transfer (USD 160.- per person/per trip).

The plane between San Cristobal and Isabela can limit luggage weight if too full, in that case some luggage will be sent on a later flight.

Climate

Galapagos can be visited all year round. There are two seasons:
    1. The Garua season goes from mid-June to mid-October (more or less): the cold current of Humboldt enters the island so the water is colder (around 17 degrees Celsius, wetsuit is needed), cloudy days and a small drizzle. This makes the climate fresher – so don’t expect all sunny days, a cooler weather for the hiking, no need of A/C or fan during the night and almost no mosquitoes. The colder water brings more plankton and more wildlife; this is the best time of the year to spot whales during the boat transports.
    2. The Warm season is from November to Mid-May: days can be really hot (more than 30 degrees) and the water is warm due to Panama current entering in the islands marine reserve. No need for a wetsuit, sunny days- this is the perfect season, if you need to warm up from the winter back home! Due to the tropical rains in this season, all the islands are greener.
In between these two seasons would be the transition time where you can have a bit of both seasons!
December to May Average Temperatures
Temperature 80ºF to 90ºF (27ºC to 32ºC)
Water temperature 70ºF to 80ºF (21ºC to 26ºC)
June to November Average
